Enhanced Lawyer Directory to Launch Thursday, July 13

Lawyer Directory is an online tool that helps connect people with lawyers across the province. The Law Society of Alberta has upgraded Lawyer Directory so that Albertans have access to more information when choosing a lawyer who meets their individual needs.

We’ve improved the functionality of Lawyer Directory by making it possible to search for a lawyer by name, firm, location, area(s) of practice, languages spoken, gender, and whether a lawyer offers limited scope retainers. As a member of the profession, you are encouraged to publish this information so that Albertans can make informed decisions before hiring a lawyer; however, if you would like to unpublish these additional personal details, you can do so by updating your settings in the Lawyer Portal.

Discipline information dating back to January 1, 2015 is also shown on profiles in Lawyer Directory. We will continue to publish discipline information going forward as per Rule 40.1. Discipline information prior to January 1, 2015 remains available on our website. Access to discipline information offers online access to the Law Society Roll (see Rule 39), which aligns with the National Discipline Standards as set by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.

We will continue to improve Lawyer Directory’s functionality in future upgrades. If you have any questions about the changes, please call the Law Society at 1.800.661.9003.
