We have implemented significant changes to our website.

Our website is an important point of contact with lawyers and the public and receives millions of hits every year. We sought feedback from the public, profession and Law Society staff on how to improve the user experience for all of our audiences. We focused on making our website accessible across platforms and mobile devices, simplifying our content, and improving the discoverability of information.

Be sure to update any bookmarks you have saved for the old site. Our homepage location (http://lawsociety.ab.ca/) remains the same, but the pages within our website have likely changed. You may receive an error message when trying to access an old page location. The best way to locate the new information is by using the website search function (click on the magnifying glass icon on the top right hand side of the screen). We have made significant improvements to this key functionality.

If you have any questions or comments about the website changes, we would like to hear from you. Please email feedback@lawsociety.ab.ca.  We have also prepared an FAQ which may help answer some of your questions.

The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, recently announced four appointments to the Court of Queen's Bench in Alberta under the new judicial application process. Read more.

The Right Honourable Viscount Bennett, PC, KC, LLD, DCL, sought to encourage a high standard of legal education, training and excellence. In 1943, he established a trust fund with 100 shares of Royal Bank stock, valued at $100 per share. The value has increased significantly, allowing the Viscount Scholarship Selection Committee to award up to three scholarships annually.

An award of up to $20,000 may be paid annually to provide for post-graduate studies in an institution of higher learning, in common law, approved by the Committee.

Applicants must be law graduates, articling students or members of the Law Society of Alberta, ordinarily resident in, or if not presently resident in, then with an express intention to return to Alberta.

This month, in collaboration with the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta, the Alberta Law Review presents its special issue on the topic of health law. Issue 54:3 includes articles submitted by acclaimed scholars and practitioners from across Canada, discussing challenges associated with reproduction, mental health, patient safety, Aboriginal health, assisted dying, and migrant health. The Issue explores the tensions and connections between the health care objectives of access, quality of care, and sustainability through cost containment. Authors review recent case law, policies, and emerging hardships faced by Canadians in 2017, and provide insights into what the future holds in store. Click here to read the Issue.
